2 CABINS KANGAROO ISLAND

KANGAROO ISLAND SA
The brief was for two holiday cabins, with minimal site intrusion on a remote coastal site on Kangaroo Island. The project was designed to take into account the extreme bush fire risk (BAL-FZ), and the proximity to the southern ocean. The cabins are to be built off site in Kingscote and transported to site in 4 modules due to the remote location and to reduce the impact of construction on the ecologically fragile site.
The palette of materials includes:
  • Recycled corrugated iron cladding
  • Timber OSB board internal linings
  • UPVC double glazed windows & doors
  • Concrete block base in natural finish
  • BAL FZ Fire shutters to all openings
The building includes the following sustainable design elements:
  • Low Impact on site & existing terrain to minimise cut and fill
  • Minimalist design
  • Rainwater capture and reuse for whole of house
  • Window and door placement to capture sea breezes & winter sun
