HENLEY BEACH ADDITION TO 1900’S VILLA

Henley Beach SA

The project is an addition to a 1900’s villa. The clients’ brief was to provide an addition with a new kitchen and meals area that took full advantage of the deep block and northern aspect to the rear of the house. The existing internal kitchen was converted to a generous double bathroom.

The new addition included a deck with a partial Danpalon roof cover for outdoor entertaining, to the north and a timber screened landing to the west.

The palette of materials includes:

  • Bagged brickwork walls with a Murawash finish

  • Cypress pine strip flooring

  • Western red Cedar door and window frames & cladding with a clear finish

  • Australian hardwood pergola and deck

The building includes the following sustainable design elements:

  • Window placement to facilitate cross ventilation and breeze paths from local sea breezes

  • Vertical and horizontal sun shading that act as privacy screens

  • Roof forms to maximise the existing PV solar collection

  • Rainwater capture and reuse for whole of house

  • Selection of sustainable and robust building materials
