HENLEY BEACH ADDITION

A contemporary adaption of a late 1960’s addition to the rear of a beachside Californian style Bungalow. The project demonstrates the opportunities to recycle, renew & reinvigorate an existing previously jumbled and unusable space. A new open plan living and dining area opens to the existing kitchen & north facing rear yard.

The bungalow was re-roofed with corrugated iron & new insulation, and the concrete tiles salvaged and sold for reuse.

The palette of materials includes:

  • Hoop pine plywood raked ceilings, joinery with recycled hardwood tops

  • Jarrah door and window frames and cladding with an oiled finish

  • Cypress pine flooring and external laminated cypress rafters

  • Salvaged jetty timbers form deep window reveals and a pergola to the northern deck

  • Recycled hardwood deck bearers and joists

  • Weathering steel cladding

  • Hoop pine plywood joinery

The building includes the following sustainable design elements:

  • Re use and adaption of existing rear 1960’s addition

  • Recycled materials incorporated in pergola and deck framing and benchtops

  • Window placement to facilitate cross ventilation and breeze paths from local gully winds & sea breezes

  • Rainwater capture and reuse for whole of house
